Education

Ph.D. (Physics) University of Wisconsin - Madison (2001) (minor: astronomy) M.S. (Physics) University of Wisconsin - Madison (1996) B.S. (Highest Honors in Physics) University of Michigan (1992)

Experience

I have CURRENT college teaching experience, planning and leading introductory physics classes (both calculus- and algebra-based; the kind of material that shows up in AP and Honors Physics Classes) at: -- Bridgewater State University (MA) -- Daniel Webster College (NH) The extensive study of physics it took to get a Ph.D., coupled with the requirement to present it in an organized way in a class structure has given me a breadth AND a completeness of understanding difficult to duplicate with either extensive study, or teaching and tutoring, alone. Moreover, I have logged thousands of hours tutoring both in person and online, with great success, in the past 2+ years. In addition to physics, I have recently twice taught an algebra and trigonometry course (Spring and Summer 2015) at: -- Nashua (NH) Community College. And I have taught basic astronomy at: -- The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater I am very flexible in the summer, and even into the fall, so please contact me to arrange sessions and schedules.

Hobbies

In my spare time, I enjoy music composition and songwriting, and also writing trivia questions. I am an avid movie fan, covering all periods and genres. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Physics is more than just figuring out which formula to use and how to determine which numbers to put in. It is WHY we are looking at these aspects; what do the equations, formulas, and laws mean regarding what we experience in the world? Understanding this context and those connections makes the problems easier to deal with, and I have the wide-ranging study AND the formal teaching experience to present that context so that it makes the most sense to students. I have many varied ways to explain situations that come up a lot. At the same time, I ALSO know how to deal with those more involved, specialty problems that are not as commonly known. BUT, I always have a keen awareness for the student's perspective when I teach and tutor. I know that they are seeing this material for the first time, and do not have my experience with it, and I tailor my instruction accordingly, patiently, step by step. I hold as paramount never making students feel inadequate or inferior for asking questions or not understanding. I encourage them to express that in a "safe space," since that is where learning begins. I love helping students see the fundamental beauty and connections in physics and math. Improving grades and class standing is an important goal, but I also like to show through examples how seemingly disparate phenomena are connected through a fundamental principle. This often brings the AHA! moment that I love to see in students.
